US Congressman. Elected to represent New Jersey at-large in the Seventeenth and three succeeding Congresses, he served from 1821 until his death in office. Holcombe was born in what is now Lambertsville, Hunterdon County, New Jersey, and graduated from Princeton in 1805. He later studied medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and in Trenton, and was a practicing physician in Allentown, New Jersey from 1808 to 1815. During this time he held several local offices and was a member of the State General Assembly (1815 to 1816) before his election to the US House. Holcombe's four terms in Congress saw him gradually won over by the political philosophy of Andrew Jackson; he was first elected as a Republican, won his second term as a Jackson Republican, and ended his career as a full-fledged Jacksonian. He died in Allentown after a long illness and was interred at Congressional Cemetery in Washington, DC.
