Second of six children of Clarence Philip Bethea (1855-1919) and Emily Ann Wright (1856-1929).

On 26 January 1908 in Clark County, Arkansas, James married first Mamie Ann Nash (1883-1910). The daughter of William Perry Nash (1840-1923) and Martha Ada Hale (1942-1892) formerly of Henry County, Georgia.

Two pregnancies:
1.) Floy "Mae" Bethea (1908-unk) who married Nicholas Albert "Nick" PETERS, Jr. (1903-1989). The couple later divorced. Nick remarried and it is believed that Mae remarried as well.
2.) infant Bethea (1910-1910) who died at birth, as well as his mother, due to complications.

On 15 December 1912 in Clark County, Arkansas, James married second Bessie Irene Stone (1890-1956). The daughter of James Lewis Stone, Sr. (1848-1898) and Alice Mariah Jenkins (1852-1912).

One child:
1.) James Weathers Bethea, Jr. (1914-1993) who married Elsie "Hope" Riner (1917-2005).
