Harold D. Summers, 80, of Akin, IL, died at 12:25 a.m. Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at St. John's Hospital, Springfield, IL.

Mr. Summers was born on July 18, 1930 in Benton, IL the son of Humbert Summers and Lilly Emma (Cambron) Summers. He married the former Iva Jean Schram on April 29, 1950 and she survives.

Harold and his wife Jean owned Jean's Market in Akin from 1959 to 1995. Harold was well known throughout Southern Illinois for his knowledge of small engine repair. He operated a shop in the back of the store repairing lawnmowers, chainsaws, and weed-eaters. He was a farmer in Akin from 1950 to 1983 and worked as a Field Technician for the Franklin County USDA/ASCS office. Harold was a pilot, enjoyed flying his airplane, gardening, and most of all, spending time with his family. He was a member of the Akin Missionary Baptist Church and the Illinois National Guard.

Surviving relatives include his wife, Iva Jean Summers, Akin, IL, three sons, Dwight Summers and wife Alice, Akin, IL, Kenneth Summers and wife Shelia, Akin, IL, Dennis Summers and wife Jessica, Mt. Vernon, IL, ten grandchildren, Heather Haynes and husband Charlie, Boonville, MO, Jason Summers and fiancé, Andrea Troutman, Troutdale, OR, Justin Summers, Akin, IL, Josh Trammel, Carbondale, IL, Kaleb and Casey Brown, both of Cobden, IL, Selinda Johnson and husband Derek, Benton, IL, Shannon Bennett and husband Jason, Akin, IL, Celia and Braden Summers, Mt. Vernon, IL, eight great-grandchildren, Logan and Addison Haynes, Scott, Cassie, Katy, Charlie and Daniel Johnson, and Tanner Bennett, two sisters, Lola Bernice Kearney, Benton, IL, Loretta Fay Alsobrooks, Tennessee, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Mr. Summers was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Wanda Lorene Summers, and one brother, Glenn Edmond Summers.

Visitation will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, April 22, 2011 and from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Hobbs-Johnson Funeral Home, Benton, IL. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. Derrick Cairel officiating. Burial will be in the Brady Cemetery, Akin, IL.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Brady Cemetery or the Akin Missionary Baptist Church and will be accepted at the funeral home.
