Lucian L. Garrett was taken in by the Jacob Robinett family in Coles County Illinois after the death of his father. The Robinett's moved to western Iowa in 1865, and Lucian grew up and married Emily Coe-Reed, whose father had also died when she was a baby. They were given land and a good start on the shores of Blue Lake, and both worked very hard raising nine children. Typhoid fever hit in the fall of 1893, and it brought Lucian down. It is said that the peonies on his grave have been there for over 100 years. He death set in motion a series of events that led to Emily giving up custody of her children to foster and adoptive homes. Their oldest son Fred, who went to live in Oakland, California, wrote about it in a family book, which is one reason we know something about it.
