Millard County Progress

Funeral services for Mrs. Birdie S. Black were held in the Second Ward Chapel Sunday, February 12, under the auspices of Bishop Henry Hatton. Appropriate music was rendered by the choir, a violin solo by Miss Olive Brunson and a duet by Mrs. Stella Day and Mrs. Blonda Knight. They were accompanied on the violin by Blaine Huntsman. The speakers were Don Wixom, A.J. T. Sorenson and Edward L. Black. Invocation was offered by Peter L. Brunson and benediction by Frank Robison. Interment was at the Fillmore cemetery and a large cortege followed the body. The casket was bedded in profuse floral display. Many beautiful wreaths were sent from out of town.

Mrs. Birdie S. Robison Black is the daughter of Benjamin H. Robison and Susannah Turner Robison and was born March 7, 1866 at Deseret, where her father had been called by Brigham Young to help settle a new country. At the age of three years, she came to Fillmore, the family home, with her father and mother. Her girlhood years were spent at Fillmore where she attended the old Millard Academy and later taught school. She helped her widowed mother care for a large family of younger brothers and sisters after her father's death which occurred when she was 17 years old.

She married George Warren Black October 15, 1885 in the St. George Temple. (Mr. Black died November 25, 1925). She went with her husband to Deseret and helped to settle the town of Hinckley. In 1897 the family returned to Fillmore where she has since resided. She was very active in church work throughout her life. She is the mother of twelve children, ten of whom survive her. They are; Dr. B.W. Black, Oakland, California; Wells Black, Des Moines, Iowa; Dr. Joel R. Black, Tucson, Arizona; Willis, Vernon, Loa Hansen, Ora Hansen, Fern Starley, all of Fillmore; Clo Hilton, Hinckley and Joy Black, who is attending school at the BYU. All of the children were here for the funeral services except Wells who was unable to get here. She is also survived by her aged mother, Mrs. Susannah T. Robison, and the following brothers and sisters; Dr. J.C. Robison, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Rose Hinckley, Los Angeles; Mrs. Zina Kirkham, New York City; G. A. Robison, Hinckley and Joseph H. Robison, Moapa; 40 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was a devoted wife and mother, a thorough Latter-Day Saint and spent her life in loving service to all.
