-Col. James W. Abraham-
Col Abraham was born in New York City in 1930. He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Barbara Blake Abraham, his four children, and his five grandchildren.
Col. Abraham enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1947 and was commissioned a 2nd Lt. in 1950. During his 34 years on active duty, he served in Korea and Vietnam, was a distinguished graduate of the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, served as CO, 11th Marines, and retired as Chief of Staff, MCRD San Diego.
His awards included the Defense Superior Service Medal, the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star, and the Good Conduct Medal. The government of Japan also awarded him the Order of the Rising Sun, Third Order of Merit with Sacred Treasure.
He received a BA in history from George Washington University and an MBA from National University. He retired in San Diego from the Marine Corps in 1981 and was employed with Cubic Corporation as a Program Manager until 1995.
He enjoyed traveling with Barbara around the world. He was active with the USO San Diego, the Marines Executive Assn., the R&A Society, and the MCRD Historical Society. He also enjoyed family gatherings and cheering on the USC Trojans.
Col. Abraham was an incredible person who brought humor, candor, and thoughtfulness to everything and everyone. He had an indomitable spirit that gave him the strength to pursue anything and fight for what he believed. His legacy will be remembered and carried on through the lives he touched.
Memorial services will be held on March 11, 2011 at the MCRD Chapel in San Diego at noon with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations to the USO SD and Vitas Hospice are greatly appreciated.
