Obituary - Admiral N. Ludlow Dies in 74th Year- Veteran Sea Fighter, Ill Only a Few Days, Succumbs To Pneumonia. Of Old Long Island Family- Born at Oakdale, L.I., Where His Father, A General In The Mexican War, Owned a Large Estate- Rear Admiral Nicoll Ludlow, U.S.N., retired, died last night in his apartments at the Hotel Gotham in Manhattan, in his 74th year. He was stricken with apoplexy last Monday and pneumonia developed soon after. With him at the time of his death was his brother, Edwin Ludlow, vice-president of the Lehigh Valley Coal and Iron Company of Lansford, Pa. The funeral services will be private, and it was Admiral Ludlow's wish that his remains be cremated and interred at the family plot in Oakdale, L.I.
Estate - Rear Admiral Nicoll Ludlow who died at the Hotel Gotham In New York on December 9, left the greater part of his estate to public institutions, two of such bequests, in the form of trust funds, being made to schools, the income to be used for the sons and daughters of commissioned line officers. The admiral also ordered that his uniforms be destroyed. He left $10,000 to St. John 's Church, Oakdale, Long Island; $15,000 to the Emma Willard School for Girls, Troy, N.Y.; $15,000 to St, Paul' s School, Concord, N.H.; Farmington Lodge Society, $5,000; University Club, $5,000, and Navy Relief Fund at Washington, $1,000. He left the residue of his estate, which will amount to about $5,000, to his brother, Edwin.
Also - Rear Admiral Nicoll Ludlow, who died a few days ago, left a legacy for Mr. and Mrs. August Maasch. They were the Admiral's caretakers many years at the Ludlow homestead, Oakdale —Brooklyn Times

Inscription
Admiral Nicoll Ludlow, with the precision for which he was noted in life, prepared the epitaph for his tombstone that should summarize his life's history, and the inscription as it will appear above his grave in St. John 's Episcopal churchyard at Oakdale, reads as follows:
"Nicoll Ludlow, Rear Admiral, U.S. N., born at Riverside, Islip, Long Island, 11th of September 1842; died December 9, 1915. Entered the U.S. Navy, on the 2nd of October 1859; served in the Civil War, 1861-65, and in the Spanish War of 1898. Filled many positions of honor and responsibility in various parts of the world as an officer of the United States Navy."
