U.S. Congressman. He attended Grand River Institute, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1851 and commenced to practice law in Ravenna, Ohio. He was prosecuting attorney for Portage County, (1861-64), a member of the Ohio State Senate, (1865, 72, 73) and Lieutenant Governor of Ohio, (1873-75). In 1883, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-eighth Congress, serving until 1885. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was a Solicitor of Internal Revenue, Treasury Department, (1888-92) and practiced law until his death at age 80.
