Kentucky Governor, US Senator. Born in Henderson, Kentucky, he graduated from St. Joseph College, in 1833, studied law, was admitted to the bar and commenced to practice law at Henderson, in 1835. He served as a member if the Kentucky State House of Representatives in 1836 and presidential elector on the Democratic ticket in 1844. In 1851, he was elected the 19th Governor of Kentucky and served until 1855. After his term, he was elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate, serving (1859-65). Following his term in the Senate, he then resumed the practice of law until his death from apoplexy at age 54 in Henderson, Kentucky.
