EDEN – Janie Hawkins Joyce, 76, of 502 Carolyn Court, B5 and formerly of Stoneville, died Wednesday, March 30, 2011.

A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 2, 2011, at First Baptist Church of Mayodan with Reverend Randy Jessup officiating. Inurnment will follow at Stoneville Municipal Cemetery.

Janie was born August 11, 1934, in Stokes County, to the late Clarence Odell and Gertrude Mabe Hawkins. She spent most of her early years in Mayodan, graduated from Mayodan High School in 1952. Shortly after graduation, she went to work for Sears, Roebuck and Co. on Lawndale Dr., in Greensboro, and retired with 41 years of service. She married F. Wray Joyce, June 8, 1957. Most of her adult life, she and Wray lived in Stoneville, NC, and had just recently moved to Eden. Janie and Wray had one child, Julie, whom Janie loved deeply and made her proud. To add icing to the cake, she was given a beloved granddaughter, Alexandra Caroline Talbert, the apple of her eye. She loved and was dedicated to her family, her many co-workers at Sears, her church, her God and the other friends she had made over the years.

Janie was involved with several clubs, PBWA, TOPPS, Madison-Mayodan Saddle Club and PTA programs and she was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Mayodan.

In the later part of Janie's life, she became disabled due to a spinal condition which greatly impeded her mobility and limited her outside activities. She could no longer go places and see people whom she had known and loved for many years.

Janie was interested in sports of all kinds, but was a fanatic of college basketball, particularly the Tarheels.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Shaw, and brother-in-law, Artie Shaw who held a special place in Janie's heart.

Survivors include her husband of 54 years, Franklin Wray Joyce of the home; daughter, Julie J. Talbert, Andrew and granddaughter, Alexandra Talbert, of Eden; brother, Clarence Odell "Sonny" Hawkins, Jr., and wife, Ellen, of Mayodan; sister, Kelly Hawkins, of Madison and numerous nieces and nephews.
