Kentucky Governor, U.S. Senator. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted the Union Army as a Private at age of fifteen, but only served a short while due to his youth. He later became a page in the Kentucky House of Representatives, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1865 and joining his father's legal firm in Lancaster, Kentucky. He was prosecuting attorney of Garrard County, (1870-89) and a member of the Republican National Committee, (1890-95). In 1895, he was elected as a Republican the 32nd Governor of Kentucky, serving until 1899. After his term, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, in 1909 and served until his death. He died of injuries suffered in a serious fall at the age 67.
