Brother Justus Richard (Van Houten) SSF

Died December 13, 2006 in Papua New Guinea
Born in Staunton, VA on October 6, 1948, Justus graduated from West Virginia Weslyan in 1970 majoring in Theater and Theatrical Lighting. He then served in Viet Nam as an interpreter.
In 1973 he came to test his vocation at Little Portion Friary, Mt Sinai, NY, as a Franciscan Friary in the Episcopal Church. He made his First Profession in the Society of Saint Francis in 1976, and his life Profession three years later. He served as Assistant Minister from 1982, and from 1993 until 2002 was Minister provincial of the Province of the Americas.
After studying at Union Theological Seminary, in May 1986 he was ordained to the Vocational Diaconate by Bishop Paul Moore Jr, who was Bishop Protector of the Society of Saint Francis. Justus served for a decade in leadership roles with the North American Association for the Diaconate, and was its President from 1995-98. He also was President of CORL (now CAROA), the leadership organization for Religious in the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Church of Canada.
For the past three years Justus has served as a Missionary of the Domestic & Foreign Missionary Society in Papua New Guinea, and at the time of his death was the Principal (Dean) of Newton Anglican Theological College in Popondetta.
His death, from respiratory and cardiac failure at the age of only 58, came just as the Society of Saint Francis worldwide was poised to elect him as Minister General for the next 6-10 years.
He served as Deacon in half a dozen parishes in New York and in San Francisco, and offered a wide variety of ministries, including hospital and campus chaplaincies. In New York, a notable ministry was his presence at Ground Zero every Tuesday from 3-11pm, from 9/11 until Ground Zero was declared closed.
Justus is survived and mourned his mother, Jean Barbara Ritter, and by all the Friars, Sisters, Tertiaries and Associates of the Society of Saint Francis.
His funeral in Papua New Guinea took place on December 18th; on dates to be announced, there will be a Memorial Liturgy at St Aidan's Church in San Francisco, and finally a Memorial Liturgy at Little Portion Friary in Mt Sinai, NY when in the presence of his family and Franciscans and friends his ashes will be interred in the Friar's cemetery.
