US Congressman, US Senator. He attended Lynchburg College, Gessner Harrison’s University School and during the Civil War, he served as a Major in the Confederate Army, being permanently disabled in the Battle of the Wilderness in May 1864. After the war, he studied law at the University of Virginia, was admitted to the bar in 1866 and commenced to practice law at Lynchburg, Virginia. He was a member Virginia State House of Delegates, (1869-72) and a member of the Virginia State Senate, (1875-81). In 1885, he elected as a Democrat to the Forty-ninth Congress, serving until 1887. He did not seek re-nomination, having been elected as a Democrat to the United States Senate in 1887 and served until his death at age 67. His birthplace the John Marshall Warwick House in the City of Lynchburg, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.
