U.S. Congressman. Born in Chatham, Virginia, he was a tobacco farmer, who graduated from the Dan River Textile School and was associated with Dan River Mills Incorporated. During World War II he served in the US Navy. After the war, he was the assistant chairman of the board for Dan River Mills Incorporated, national commander of American Legion, (1951-56), a member of the Virginia House of Delegates, (1959-68) and President of Virginia State Chamber of Commerce, in 1968. In 1969, he was elected as a Democrat to the Ninety-first Congress and to the next nine succeeding Congresses, serving until his death from a heart attack at age 73 in Charlottesville, Virginia.
