US Congressman. He attended the local schools in Carlisle and pursued a classical course of studies. He graduated from Dickinson College in 1839. He established a law practice in Carlisle after passing the bar in 1841. Upon entering the political arena he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-fourth US Congress and served from March 4, 1855 to March 3, 1857. His 1856 bid for reelection was unsuccessful, so he returned to his law practice. During the Civil War he served in the Union Army as a major of the First Regiment, Pennsylvania Volunteer Reserve Corps. Following the war he served as the Pennsylvania governor's inspector general. He ran gain for the US House of Representatives and was elected to the Forty-third US Congress. He was not a candidate for reelection in 1874 and returned to his law practice. He remained in Carlisle until his death.
