Gerald Gean (Jerry) Teal of Boise passed away the morning of March 25, 2009, at the long-time home he shared with his beloved wife, Francoise.

He was born Dec. 16, 1937 in American Falls to Harry Teal and Gertrude (Ander-son) Teal, with his twin sister, Gerald Dean (Groom).

He was a remarkable man whose treasured pursuits included architecture, woodworking, and classic cars. Jerry built a respected 35-year career out of his love for elegant lines and form. He designed a number of well-known buildings in the Treasure Valley, and volunteered much of his time and talent to Habitat for Humanity.

Outside of work, Jerry almost always could be found in his shop, sitting in his chair watching "Antiques Roadshow," or transforming scrap lumber and rough-hewn logs into beautiful jewelry boxes, heirloom furniture, lamp-stands, or kitchen cabinets for his family. Jerry's intricate woodwork expressed his love and was just one aspect of the spectacular creativity that defined and shaped him.

Jerry also had a knack for mechanics and a love for classic cars. If you saw a green MG trundling down State Street on weekday mornings, that was Jerry. On Saturday mornings, if you saw a green MG outside of Granny's Cafe or Elmer's Restaurant, that was Jerry sharing breakfast with a core group of classic car club friends.

More than anything, Jerry was a foundation for his family and served as a surrogate father for many. He shared his wisdom without force, he listened without judgment, he gave his time and love without expectation. He was a constant, comfortingly predictable presence. He was our mentor, our sibling, our friend.

Jerry graduated from Rockland School in 1956, working simultaneously for the Bureau of Reclamation in American Falls and on the family farm with his father. He then attended school at what was then Idaho State College, earning a BA in architecture in '62. For the next 13 years, he worked for two architectural firms in Boise, laying the groundwork that would lead him to become a business owner. One of the pivotal projects that helped propel his reputation was 10 years' work on the Idaho State Penitentiary.

In 1975, Jerry opened Teal Architects, a firm that, through March 2009, produced projects ranging from small buildings and commercial campuses to medical offices, assisted living homes and medical warehouses. Under Jerry's direction, Teal Architects also worked on religious, residential and technical ventures, including solar and earth-shelter homes, and an allergen-free, environmentally conscious home.

Most importantly in 1965, Jerry married Francoise Battaglieri with whom he raised four children: twin daughters Jeanette and Lisa, and sons Ross and Tealdo. Francoise and Jerry have four grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jerry was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Betty Barker; a brother, Melvin Teal; and his brother-in-law, Homer Barker.

He is survived by his wife, Francoise, and their children: Jeanette Teal; daughter Lisa and Lee (husband) Weatherwax, and their daughter, Jean; Ross Hicks and his children, Kristopher, Karianne and Koryn; Tealdo and Kelly (wife) Teal. Jerry is also survived by his twin sister, Gerald Dean and her husband Roy, as well as a number of extended family members.

A celebration of Jerry's life took place on Tuesday, March 31, 2009, at Collister Community Church, 4709 W State Street, Boise
