In 1830, Charles worked with the American Fur Company, traveling to Missouri, Colorado, South Dakota, New Mexico, and Nebraska.
In 1836, Charles enlisted in the 2nd US Cavalry, formed as the Second Dragoons. The regiment served in Florida during the Seminole War and Charles fought in several battles, including the battle of Okeechobee. After his time in Florida, he returned to Jefferson Barracks, out to the Arkansas frontier, and later returned to Ft. Madison, Iowa. In 1840 he located in Keokuk, Iowa, where he became a blacksmith. In 1851, still in the employ of the US government, he went to Ft. Dodge, Iowa, to take charge of the government smithing. After his final discharge, he returned to Keokuk and in 1859 headed for Colorado.
During this time, Charles married Maria Murch on 8 Dec 1846. Charles and Maria had ten children: Josephine, Maria, Kate, Charles S, Nettie, and five deceased at a young age.
Charles stopped in Plattsmouth, Nebraska, on his way to Colorado. The Civil War began, and on 22 Nov 1862 enlisted as a farrier. On 13 Dec 1862 he mustered in the 2nd Nebraska Cavalry. He served in the Nebraska Territory and was a veterinary surgeon when he mustered out on 23 Dec 1863.
By 1870 Charles and his family were living in Villisca, Montgomery County, Iowa.
Charles died in 1884 at the age of 76 years 5 months. Maria died in 1886.
