U.S. Senator. Learning from his father, he became a successful as a jeweler and watchmaker. He was chairman of the Republican Delaware State committee, (1886-96) and a member of the Delaware State Senate, (1899-1903). In 1903, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate, serving until 1907. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed his previous business interest, plus engaged in the fruit and vegetable canning industry until his death at age 80.
