U.S. Congressman. He graduated from the University of North Carolina, in 1934, studied law, was admitted to bar in 1936 and practiced law in Tarboro, North Carolina. He was a member of the North Carolina State Senate, (1936-41) and during World War II, served as a Major in the Judge Advocate General’s Office, U. S. Army Reserve, (1942-46). After his military service, he was again a member of the North Carolina State Senate, (1947-52). In 1953, he was elected as a Democrat to the Eighty-third Congress and to the next fourteen succeeding Congresses, serving until 1983. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed the practice of law and served as Lieutenant Governor of the Sixth Division of the Carolinas District of Kiwanis International.
