The son of John & Susan Jane (Moore) Adams, in 1860 he was a mason living in Spring Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 7" tall and had brown hair and hazel eyes. He married Abigail Jane Fenicle who, in 1860, was living with Richard with the surname "Fenicle" with a two-month-old daughter named Susannah Fenicle, but both Abigail and Susannah have the surname "Adams" in the 1870 census. Susannah and the other children are linked below.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Harrisburg September 14, 1864, mustered into federal service there September 15 as a private with Co. F, 209th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865. His brother John served in the same company.

He apparently lived his entire life in Perry County, where he died in Spring Township from "organic heart disease [with a] history of about 2 years."
