U.S. Congressman. Born near Womelsdorf, Pennsylvania, he was successful in land and iron interests. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of representatives in 1783, and one of the first associate judges of Berks County, (1790-96). In 1796, he was elected as a Federalist to the Fourth Congress to fill the vacancy caused by the resignation of Daniel Hiester and reelected to the Fifth Congress, serving until 1797. After his term, he resumed his position as associate judges of Berks County, (1797-1801) and operated the Schuylkill County Forge, until his death at age 81 in Marion Township, Pennsylvania.
