US Congressman. Born in Beaufort, South Carolina, he graduated from South Carolina College in 1823, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1825 and commenced to practice law in Coosawhatchie, South Carolina. He was a member of the South Carolina State House of Representatives, (1830-47). In 1849, he was elected as a Democrat to the Thirty-first and Thirty-second Congresses, serving until 1853. He was also a Regent of the Smithsonian Institution, (1850-53). After his term, he served as collector of the Port of Charleston, first under the United States Government and then under the Confederate States Government, during the Civil War. After the war, he resumed the practice of law until his death at age 88 in McPhersonville, South Carolina.
