William A. "Bill" Birkes ENID — Burial service for William A. "Bill" Birkes, 77, of Enid, will be in Grace Hill Cemetery, Perry, Okla. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the United States Navy. Service is under the kind guidance of Stitts-worth Funeral Service.
Bill was born Nov. 11, 1933, in Oklahoma City, the son of Arthur Franklin and Evelyn Ruth Finefield Birkes and died Monday, Dec. 13, 2010, at Highland Park Manor.
He was raised in Red Rock, graduating from Red Rock High with the class of 1951. Bill graduated from Oklahoma A&M in Stillwater in 1955 with a degree in education.
He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1956 and served his country four years.
Bill taught history in the high school level in Tulsa, later teaching history in Upland, Calif.
Bill married Mantha Bolton in the Tulsa area on April 2, 1960. In 1979 he moved to Perry, Okla., and in 1991, moved to Green Valley before moving to Enid. He was a mediator for Oklahoma and was awarded the Mediator of the Year Award several times. Bill also was past president of the Lions Club, Upland, Calif.
Bill is survived by his beloved companion of 20 years, Margaret Ellen Long, of the residence; daughters, Laura and husband David Brown of Clinton, Mo., Cindy Birkes and companion Jim Turner of Corona, Calif., Jeanie Nichols of Breckinridge, Okla., and Luhra Tivis of Enid; one granddaughter, Crystal Burris of Littleton, Colo.; and Bill's beloved cats.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Margaret Sanders.
