U.S. Congressman. Educated at the Lancaster Academy, he engaged in mercantile pursuits and was the founder of the Pennsylvania Littlestown Railroad and the Gettysburg National Bank. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives 1807-1812 and served in the defense of the city of Baltimore, Maryland, during the War of 1812. After the war, he in the Pennsylvania State Senate in 1813 and was a delegate to the state constitutional conventions (1837-38). In 1821, he was elected as a Federalist to the Seventeenth Congress, serving until 1823. An unsuccessful candidate for re-election, he was again a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives (1824-30, 34-35) and resumed his mercantile pursuits until his death.
