US Congressman, US Senator. He was successful New York businessman when he moved to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, in 1847 and established a lumber mill. He was a member of the Wisconsin Assembly (1857, 1861) and Mayor of Oshkosh, (1863-64). In 1865, he was elected as a Republican to the Thirty-ninth Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until 1875. He declined to be a candidate for renomination, to serve as chairman, for the Committee on Public Expenditures and the Committee on Pacific Railroads. In 1881, he was elected as a Republican to the United States Senate and served until 1893. Not a candidate for reelection, he resumed his lumber business pursuits until his death at age 83 in Oshkosh, Wisconsin.
