Obituary

Upper Montgomery County lost one of its elder statesmen and most respected citizens with the death Sunday of Richard Edwin Darby at the home of his nephew, William C. Brown, in Barnesville. Mr. Darby's sister, Mrs. Ellen Ruth Iglehart also died the same day at the same place.

Mr. Darby, after retiring Saturday night in apparent good health, was found dead in bed Sunday morning. Mrs. Iglehart, who had been ill for several weeks, died a few hours later.

Mr. Darby, known to his many associates as "Ed," was formerly a farmer, but was also active in business, civic and political affairs in the county. He was formerly a county commissioner and a Democratic member of the State Central Committee. He was also a director of the Farmers' Banking and Trust Co., in Rockville.

When informed of Mr. Darby's death, Robert Peter, Jr., chairman of the United Democratic Organization of Montgomery County, made the following statement, "The news of Mr. Darby's death was a deep shock to me. In his passing, Montgomery County has lost one of its finest and most beloved citizens, and the Democratic Party has lost one of its oldest and best friends. Mr. Darby's devotion to the best interests of the party was second only to his work for the welfare and advancement of the county as a whole."

Mrs. Iglehart was the widow of Basil Iglehart, of Barnesville.

Double funeral services were held Tuesday at Mr. Brown's home, with the Rev. Guy Crook, rector of the Episcopal Church for Barnesville and Poolesville, officiating. Interment was in Monocacy Cemetery, Beallsville.
