During his infancy he was baptized into the Congregational Church.

In the spring of 1855, he left the home of his boyhood and moved to Cambridge, Story County, Iowa. During this time he was an active member of the Evangelical Church.

On November 29, 1860, he married Eleanor Tillotson at Cambridge.

In 1863 he enlisted in Company "I" 8th Iowa Cavalry. He remained until the end of the war.

In August of 1863, he joined the Union Army and was a 5th Sergeant in Company I, 8th Iowa Cavalry during the Civil War.

Levi and Eleanor had eight children, seven of whom with their mother survive.

After moving to Miami on January 19, 1900, he joined the J. B. McPherson Grand Army of the Republic Post.

On December 22, 1900, Levi was received into the Miami Friends Church.

His funeral was held at the Friends Church and Pastor Jeremiah Hubbard preached the funeral service. His brother-comrades with their usual loving care performed the last rites at the cemetery.
