Cecil "Sam" Sampson, 81, of Hattiesburg, formerly of Long Beach, Miss., died April 16, 2011, at his home. Services will be Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 11:30 a.m. at Moore Funeral Home in Hattiesburg.
Mr. Sampson served in the U.S. Army and was an avid astronomer and fisherman. He was an engineer within the space industry and designed the containment cage for the 1st monkey that flew around the moon, which was named Sam after him.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Ada Nelson; and two sisters, Maxine Natwick and Waveline Lund.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine Sampson of Hattiesburg; a son, Kurtis Bryan (Terri) Sampson of Allen, Tex.; a daughter, Cynthia Louise (Wayne) Dawson of Oak Grove; four grandchildren, Laura Catherine and Alexandra Dawson of Hattiesburg, Jeffrey (Trish) Sampson of Austin, Tex., and Sarah (Ramey) Dean of Midland, Tex.; and two great-grandchildren, Kirsten and Ripley Dean.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 10:30 a.m. until service time at Moore Funeral Home in Hattiesburg.
His Mother was Addie Runion and his father was Homer Sampson of Calhoun County West Virginia. They were married in Clay County, West Virginia in 1922.
