Roman Catholic Saint. Elected the fifteenth Abbot of Monte Cassino in 828, succeeding Saint Apollinaris, Saint Deusdedit was noted for his generosity and almsgiving. Governing the house for a period of six years, following the death of Sicon, Prince of Benevento, with whom he was on friendly terms, Deusdedit was taken captive by the prince's son, Sicard, who wished to appropriate the property of the abbey and extort money from him. As the abbot could not or would not deliver the money demanded, he was thrown into a dungeon where he died of cold and starvation on October 9, 834, after being the subject of general abuse. While many miracles are reported to have been worked at his tomb, to date he remains one of the most venerated saints in Sora. His liturgical celebration is held on October 9.
