U.S. Congressman. He immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1847 and later was editor of a newspaper in Port Washington, Wisconsin, in 1854. There he was also postmaster, clerk of the circuit court, clerk of the land office and a public notary. Moving to Milwaukee, he was proprietor- editor of the Milwaukee See-Bote (1856-60), a member of the Wisconsin State Assembly in 1863 and served in the Wisconsin State Senate, (1870-71). In 1879, he was elected as a Democrat to the Forty-sixth, Forty-seventh and Forty-eighth Congresses, serving until 1885. An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he was appointed chairman of a commission to diminish the Umatilla Indian Reservation in Oregon in 1887 and appointed consul at Crefeld, Germany, serving (1896-97).
