Charles John Joughin was the chief baker aboard the maiden voyage of the RMS Titanic in April 1912. Mr. Joughin survived the sinking, remaining on board until the end, and stepping off the foundering liner as the sea closed over her stern. Mr. Joughin has been recognized as "the last man off the Titanic." He swam in icy water before clinging to an overturned lifeboat where he awaited rescue with several other men. His legs and feet severely frostbitten, Joughin recovered from his ordeal and continued to serve aboard ocean liners - surviving two more shipwrecks. He later gave up the sea and retired to Paterson, New Jersey, where he lived until his death.

Charles Joughin's character was portrayed in several films on the Titanic disaster. He is more prominently portrayed in the 1958 British film, A NIGHT TO REMEMBER, by the late actor, George Rose. In James Cameron's 1997 film, TITANIC, Joughin's character is again depicted clutching the ship's railing at the very stern and was seen going down with the ship. In the 1958 film, Joughin was shown to be later rescued by one of the lifeboats from the freezing water, while the 1997 film shows him sinking beneath the waves with the Titanic as the North Atlantic claims the great ship.

Shortly before his death in 1956, Charles Joughin was in contact with Walter Lord, the author of "A NIGHT TO REMEMBER", and was grateful to see that Mr. Lord wrote much about his experiences. Although Joughin was pleased to own a copy of Walter Lord's book, he died less than two years before his experiences were recreated in the 1958 film.
