Isaac G. Mendez dies unexpectedly
Isaac G. Mendez, 71, one of the leaders of the Spanish speaking residents of the Decatur area, died suddenly at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at his home, 822 North 10th street. Although he had been ill for some time, death was unexpected.
He was born in Sabunas, Hldg., Mexico, Jan. 21, 1889, the son of Thomas and Isabelle Mendez, and had resided in this community since 1945. He was married to Alejandra Guerrero Sept. 21, 1919.
Mr. Mendez, a retired employee of the General Dredge Corp., Fort Wayne, was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic church and the Holy Name society. He was a founder and charter member of the Decatur Latin-American club. He received his naturalization papers in 1955.
Surviving are his wife; four sons, Robert, Blas, Paul and Manuel Mendez all of Decatur; seven daughters, Mrs. John (Mary) Robles, Mrs. Jesse (Barbara) Gomez, Mrs. Connie Moreno, and Mrs. Rita Vargas, all of Fort Wayne, Mrs. Susie Chavarria of Eloy, Ariz., and Mrs. Tommie Serna and Mrs. Annie Garcia, both of Decatur; one sister, Miss Maria Mendez of Loredo, Mex.; two brothers, Jesus Mendez of corpus Christi, Tex., and Margarito Castenda of Robstown, Tex.; 62 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic church, with Rev. Jacob M. Gall as celebrant of the mass. Burial will be in the Catholic cemetery. Friends may call at the Gillig-Doan & Sefton funeral home after 7 p.m. today until time of the services. The rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Friday.(May 21, 1969)
