Graduated from Preston High School in Preston, Caroline County, Md. Before being drafted to WWII he in work at his father's, Roy Legates, Sr., tomato canning business in Bethlehem, Maryland . He was enlisted in U. S. Army in April of 1946 and died while on duty at a P.O.W. camp on Luzon Island in the Philippines on November 27, 1946.

A newspaper clipping reporting the death of Roy LeGates, Jr., better known as "Tony" LeGates. an article found online from the "Denton Journal" dated January 10, 1947, states that Tony was killed on November 27, 1946. He is buried at Spring Hill Cemetery in Easton, Maryland, next to his father, Roy, Sr., and his grandparents, Nathaniel and Christine Louise LeGates.
