Nancy Matthews Hay McCrory was the eldest daughter of William and Martha Hay. She married McCrory in November 1813. Hay wrote of his daughter in his account book the following, "this dutiful unfortunate child compelled to move to Tuscaloosa in the state of Alabama, died there childless on 7th of April 1827 being only a few hours sick which commenced after dinner on Friday night of the 6th and buried at 9 o'clock A.M. on Sunday 8th of sd month. Here was virtue, affection, sweet temper, love and Godliness mercifully removed from sorrow, grief, and woe..."
