Born ca. 1831, in North Carolina, to John Winkler and Sarah Heilman. The Winkler and Heilman families were Germans, having come to North Carolina from Pennsylvania.

John came with his parents to Bean Blossom Township, in Monroe County, Indiana, at some point in the 1830s. By 1860, he was living in Jackson Township, Brown County.

He enlisted in the military on 26 January 1865, during the Civil War, and served until 26 January 1866, serving in Company E, of the 145th infantry regiment.
