1913 Jan 2 Parsons Daily Sun "W.P. Calkins is Dead-Came to Parsons in 1870 from Spencer County, Indiana-W.P. Calkins died last night at his home ten miles northeast of Parsons after an illness of several weeks. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 from the home of his son W. M. Calkins, 1802 Crawford avenue. Burial will be made in Oakwood Cemetery. Mr. Calkins who was eighty-two years of age at the time of his death was born in Spencer County, Indiana where he spent his youth and early manhood. In 1870 he came to Kansas and soon after settled on a farm near Parsons. He was later employed as engineer at the old Hoke's mill for more than twenty years. He is survived by four children, a son W.M. Calkins of Parsons, and three daughters, Mrs Emma Dickerson of South Mound, Mrs. M. Cowgill of Parsons, and Mrs Bert Fraul [sic] who resides in Washington. He was a member of the American Post G.A.R. the Sons and Daughters of Justice, and also the Baptist Church."
