Elisha Warfield was born in Lexington, KY and was the oldest son of William Pollock Warfield and Maria Elizabeth Griffith Warfield. He is named for his paternal grandfather, Dr. Elisha Warfield, who bred the horse Darley to later be named Lexington.

Elisha Warfield was born March 2, 1838, and was a prewar planter in Laconia, Desha Co., Arkansas. During the Civil War he was wounded in action twice, once at Chickamauga and once in Atlanta where he was shot in the left elbow. Warfield was court-martialed on March 30, 1863 and reprimanded. He made the rank of Colonel on December 29, 1863. After the war, Warfield managed plantations in Concordia Parish, Louisiana and Natchez, Mississippi. Elisha Warfield died December 26, 1894, at his residence near Natchez. He is buried in the Natchez City Cemetery. An obituary memorialized him as, "a most excellent, energetic gentleman."
