James P. Hostetler, 83, of West Liberty, former West Liberty fire chief, passed away Friday afternoon, April 8, 2011, in Mary Rutan Hospital.

Jim was born in rural West Liberty on June 9, 1927, to the late Mervin A. and Ruth Troyer Hostetler. He also was preceded in death by a son, Todd; and a brother, Bud Hostetler.

On Feb. 13, 1949, he married Sue Rupert in West Liberty and she survives, along with 3 children, eight grandsons, 19 great-grandchildren; 3 siblings, a sister-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.

The former owner/operator of Hostetler Auto Service in West Liberty, he served 26 years as fire chief, retiring in 1999 after more than 50 years of service with the West Liberty Fire Department. He was a state-certified fire training instructor and past president of the Logan County Firefighters Association.

In 2009, Jim was inducted into the Mac-O-Chee Quarter Midget Hall of Fame and he received the Community Service Award in 2010 from the Grand Lodge of Ohio Free & Accepted Masons. He was active in Miami Valley Steam Threshers Association, Gideons and was a life member of the West Liberty Lions Club.

A member of the West Liberty United Presbyterian Church, where he served many years as a Sunday School teacher, an elder and clerk, he also was active in the Epiphany Prison Ministry and Emmaus.

He was a great dad and loved West Liberty.

The Rev. Angie Schenck officiates a funeral at 11 a.m. Wednesday in West Liberty United Presbyterian Church. Burial is in Fairview Cemetery, West Liberty. Visitation is from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the West Liberty Fire Department.

Memorial contributions may be made to the West Liberty Fire Department, West Liberty United Presbyterian Church and the West Liberty Lions Club.
