Died when helicopter in which he was an observer crashed and burned in South Vietnam

On October 30, 1971, pilot WO1 Eric A. McMichael and observer SGT Jack A. Garnes comprised the crew of a U.S. Army OH-6A light observation helicopter (#69-16007) from Air Cavalry Troop, 2nd Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry. They were flying a visual reconnaissance mission in Binh Duong Province, RVN. At 9:55 AM their aircraft was attacked with small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fire, causing it to crash and burn. SGT Garnes was fatally injured in the attack. WO1 McMichael suffered severe burns and was taken to the 24th Evacuation Hospital at Long Binh.
