New York Governor. Entering politics in 1807, he was Schoharie town clerk, Schoharie town supervisor, (1808-09) and Sheriff of Schoharie, in 1812. He was a member of the New York House of Representatives, (1814-18) and in the New York State Senate, (1820-22). In 1842, he was elected as a Democrat the 13th Governor of New York, serving until 1844. After leaving office, he served as the assistant federal treasurer of New York City, (1846-49).
