Stating her desire to "keep teaching," she chose to donate her body to the University of Tennessee Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, contributions to Fort Worth Museum of Science and History School â€" Preschool Program, 1600 Gendy St., Fort Worth, Texas 76107, would be much appreciated. Barbara was born April 9, 1929, in Nashville, Tenn., to architect Donald Wright Southgate and Lizinka Elliston Farrell. She graduated from Vanderbilt University with a B.A. English. She lived in Tucson, Austin, Yuma, and Phoenix before settling in Fort Worth, in 1964. She was a strong woman who raised four children on her own after being divorced in 1968. She worked at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History as a preschool teacher, an experience she truly treasured, while completing her teaching certificate at Texas Wesleyan College. Later, she taught kindergarten through third grade and managed a Children's World childcare center. Her life was devoted to the education of young children, and she never lost her ability to appreciate and share her delight in the wonders of the world with them. She moved to Missoula, Mont., and lived with her daughter and son-in law, Ellen and Tom Crouse, in 2002. In 2007 she returned to Tennessee to be close to her older sister, Carolyn Southgate Sartor, who preceded her in death one month to the day; her younger sister, Elizabeth Southgate Woodard, died in Boston in 2006. Survivors: Barbara is survived by her daughter, Ellen of Memphis, Tenn.; granddaughter, Clara Jewel Moore of Austin; dear nieces and nephews in Tennessee and Massachusetts and children in Texas and Arkansas.
