Moses Frederick Garneaux grew up in White River, SD, and was of the Rosebud Sioux tribe. He served in Korea as a member of Company K, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2d Infantry Division. His company took very heavy casualties while trying to come to the aid of troops who were trapped by the Chinese north of Hoengsong on February 12, 1951.

Moses and many others were captured and were subjected to death marches that lasted several months in frigid winter weather. But Moses survived and was repatriated in August 1953. Almost half of his comrades died of malnutrition, diseases, lack of medical care, exposure and violence at the hands of their North Korean and Chinese guards. R.I.P. Private Garneaux.
