About four years later his mother moved to Sullivan and he made his home with her until after her marriage to William Merrifield when in about 1870 he went to live with his mother's brother in Greenville, Mississippi. While living there he attended one of the first public schools in the south.

In 1872 he returned to Ohio and lived with his mother until her death when the home was broken up. In 1876 he learned telegraphy which profession he followed three years.

He then began the study and teaching of music. This with kindred branches he made his life work. He was also interested in' pianos, both selling and tuning, being considered skillful tuner and player man. While living in Ada he married Elizabeth Pauline Sanner. To this union one son was born Paul Atkin of Portage Center. His wife died in 1886.

While teaching in the Fayette Normal School, Fayette, Ohio, he married Clara Hubbard in 1898, two sons were born, Charles Clark Atkin of Hanford, California and Percy Hubbard Atkin of Elco, Nevada.

For many years Mr. Atkin's home has been in Bowling Green and there on February 17, 1917 he married Miss Grace LeGalley. Mr. Atkin was a good Christian man and a member of the Christian Church in Bowling Green. For many years he was a teacher of the Men's Bible Class until his health failed him. He enjoyed working in the garden with his flowers. He was a kind and loving husband and father and a great lover of children.

He leaves to mourn his loss, his wife, 3 sons, 9 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, a sister in David City, Nebraska, many nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
