John A. McDonald, a farmer, and a principled man with the courage to make tough decisions in life, and under the direst of circumstances...a nation at war. At peril to himself and the family he left behind, he decided to go against the majority of men in his home county strongly in support of the Southern cause for independence, and join the Union Army.

At age 21, John joined for duty Oct 10th, 1863 in Jamestown, Tennessee, and was Mustered-In at Nashville, Tennessee on December 3, 1863. He was a Private in Co. C, 1st Regiment Tennessee Mounted Infantry (Union Guards.) His service duty included Carthage, Granville and on line of the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad in District of Middle Tennessee, guarding and responding to skirmishes by Confederate Cavalry and marauders throughout this area.

He was Mustered-Out of the Union Army on December 13, 1864 at Carthage, Tennessee.

John A McDonald married Margaret E. Hill on the 2nd of April 1867. The names of their children can be found on his wife's memorial link.
