Philip Walch was said to have been born in Pennsylvania. His mother brought him to Deseret Territory, where he was baptized when he was about nine years old. He married Louisa Ivie on April 20th, 1864, when he was 26 years old. Their first child, Charles, was born in Arizona Territory; by the 1870 census, he was living in Scipio, owned land, and worked as a farmer.

Philip and Louisa had 11 children, two of whom died as infants and one who died as a child. Their marriage was sealed at the Endowment House in Salt Lake on June 19th, 1871.
