Thomas J. Gargan of Denver, a health benefits CEO, died May 11 at Swedish Medical Center. He was 76.

Mass of Christian burial was said May 17 at Church of the Risen Christ. Interment was in Fort Logan National Cemetery.

He was born in Golden. He attended Notre Dame University and Regis University and received a master's degree from Denver University. During World War II, he served with the military.

Appointed by Mayor Bill McNichols to the Urban Renewal Board of Commissions, he helped develop the Tabor Center, create the combined campuses of Auraria and strengthen lower downtown Denver.

He was chairman of the board of the Lupus Foundation of Colorado and chairman emeritus of the Serra Trust Fund for Vocations.

He received the Silver Beaver, Bronze Pelican and St. George awards from Boy Scouts of America and Catholic Scouting as well as the Sertoma Service to Mankind Award and Notre Dame Man of the Year Award.

He is survived by his wife, Maria; a son, Thomas J.; four daughters, Mary Ann Murphy, Therese Gargan, Maureen Caldwell and Shelia K. Gargan; two sisters, Mary Brown and Ann Bediz; and 10 grandchildren.
