Musician. Born in Marietta, Pennsylvania, he was regarded as one of jazz music's finest drummers. In a career which spanned more then four decades, he performed and recorded with artist to include Oscar Peterson, Dave Brubeck, Dave McKenna, Woody Shaw, Benny Carter, Sonny Stitt, Charles Mingus and Rahsaan Roland Kirk. Despite an active performance schedule, Dawson also maintained a full teaching schedule and single-handedly set the standard for advanced drum instruction. He continued to play and teach right up until he lost his battle with leukemia at the age of 66.
