OBITUARY:

Bernice H. Butler, 89, of Derry, NH died Thursday April 14, 2011 at the Pleasant Valley Nursing Center of Derry. She was born May 10, 1921 in Boston, MA, a daughter of the late Eugene L. and Valentine E. (Scott) Whitney. Mrs. Butler was raised and educated in the Somerville area, and had been a resident of Nottingham, NH for over 30 years, prior to moving to Derry in 2010.
Mrs. Butler was a homemaker, a fantastic jelly maker and was also known for her pickled watermelon rinds and wonderful birthday cakes. She enjoyed watching NASCAR races, loved to sew, and was an award winning hand quilter. Mrs. Butler was a longtime devoted member of Christ Church in Somerville, MA and was married in the church. She will long be remembered for her quick wit and her deep devotion to her family.

She is survived by a daughter; Carol J. Butler-Chaisson of Plymouth, MA, three sons; Louis C. Butler, Jr. of Melrose, MA, Scott N. Butler of Belmont, MA and William F. Butler of Nottingham, five grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, a brother; Eugene L. Whitney, Jr. of Tampa, FL and also by many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Louis C. Butler, Sr. in 1993, a grandson; Jeffrey L. Butler in 1996, and a sister; Florence L. Gale in 1986.

There will be no calling hours. Following cremation a memorial service will be held in the Church of the Transfiguration, 1 Hood Rd., Derry, NH. A burial service will take place in the South Side Cemetery in Nottingham, NH. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to the Jeffrey L. Butler Memorial Fund c/o Eastern Bank, 441 Main St., Melrose, MA 02176 or to the Compassionate Care Hospice, 25 Nashua Rd., Suite E3, Londonderry, NH 03053.
