Son of John Arnett and Sarah (Kyle) Chapin.
After his marriage to Martha "Matt" Alameda Gibson, on October 18, 1884, John "Land" Chapin and his wife moved to south Fork, MO. Where Land farmed with his brother, Hugh. They lived there until the birth of their eighth child. Later, Land moved the family to Matt's former family home in Chapin, M., where their last child was born.
About 1919, they moved to Tucson, AZ., with their daughter Pearl and her young son, Art. Their son, Earnest, had moved there previously. They purchased land at Cortez, near Tucson, where they planned to raise cotton. The property had been sold with the promise that the land would be irrigated--but irrigation was never carried out, so everyone who bought the land lost. John Orlando had mortaged his Missouri farm to buy the AZ land. He returned to Howell County in 1922/23 determined to pay off the debt. After several years he found regaining his farm was a losing battle. In Oct of 1931 he went to California to live with Pearl who had left Arizona, where he spent the remainder of his life. He was buried there and later moved back to the family cemetery at Howell Valley.
Matt, his wife, remained in Tucson with sons Earnest and Bob until her death.

Others in family line say that he returned to Arizona and did not leave to live in California until after Matt's death. His remains were brought back and buried in family plot in 2006 or 2007.
