US Congressman. A native of Coshocton, Ohio, he was a successful businessman whose entrepreneurial endeavors in coal mining, paper manufacturing, banking and retail led him to become one of the area's most influential community leaders. He served his community by being a member of the board of education, serving as president of the local board of trade, and by being a trustee of the local public library. From 1857 to 1869 he was the deputy county treasurer. He was elected as a Democrat to Congress twice, serving his hometown district from 1901 to 1905. He declined to seek a third term and returned to Coshocton where he continued his business affairs.
